The Central Organization of Trade Unions, COTU (K), takes this opportunity on behalf of the Kenyan workers to sincerely thank His Excellency the President Mwai Kibaki for yet again recognizing the organization’s Secretary General and awarding him the State Commendation of Kenya of the Elder of the Burning Spear (EBS) during the just concluded Jamhuri Day Celebrations.
Indeed this is a great honour from His Excellency the President Mwai Kibaki to the Kenyan workers as well as to the workers in the region and beyond for which the Secretary General serves through the various positions he holds locally, regionally, on the continent as well as globally and the award, being in recognition of one’s outstanding and distinguished services rendered to the nation in various capacities and responsibilities, attests to the rare recognition by the President of these various positions held by the Secretary General.
Further, as Kenyan workers we pride in this rare acknowledgement since for the first time ever in the history of the Central Organization of Trade Unions, COTU (K) since its formation in 1965, the organization’s Secretary General has variously been recognized through his election to various regional, continental and global labour movement bodies and for the first time in the history of this country, the Secretary General was recognized in 2007 for the award of the Moran of the Burning Spear (MBS) and now for the Elder of the Burning Spear (EBS).
The gesture shows the important role the Kenyan workers have and continue to play in the country’s social, economic and political spheres and equally we wish to reiterate our support to His Excellency the President Mwai Kibaki’s leadership and as he nears his retirement from office, as workers we will continue to wish him well and pray that whoever succeeds him will continue with this rare legacy particularly in working closely with the workers of this country.
We thank the President for recognizing our efforts.
Francis Atwoli, MBS, EBS
