RE: OUR UNCOMPROMISED STAND ON NHIF RATES
We from the Kenya Union of Sugar Plantation Workers Union (KUSPWU) want to make our stand in solidarity COTU (K) that we will not effect the deductions orchestrated by the NHIF new rates.
Our members nationwide are already aware of our stand and as you all know our union draws large membership from Mumias Sugar Company Limited, Nzoia Sugar Company, Sony Sugar, Chemilil among others. We are all going to stand in solidarity to oppose the implementation of the proposed scheme.
Kenyan workers are experiencing gross problems due to the high cost of living. Prices of commodities hiking day and night. Cartels creating shortages of basic commodities and hoarding of items like sugar that has left a common mwananchi not only poor but also wondering if he was created by a lesser God than others.
It is therefore very disturbing to note that even after the NHIF management being aware of this serious problems facing Kenyans, they went ahead to propose a scheme that will frustrate them more than before.
The government of Kenya should get these stern warnings in time before we announce an industrial action. They should lead by example by calling for a crisis meeting between itself, COTU (K) and NHIF management. This is the only forum that will expose suitable recommendations to curb that unilateral decision made by NHIF that was supported by the judiciary in its ruling last month.
